A Father and Community Rally after Tragedy

In 2020, the unimaginable happened to one of our brothers from Local 171, David Sweeney: he lost his son in a violent home invasion. After this happened, David wanted to pour into his community and build a playground in his son’s honor and memory. Local 171’s MAC committee sprang into action to build and raffle a full swing set to donate proceeds to the park. Carpenters Caring also reached out to make a donation, but the park was still a way from being fully funded and approved by the city.

Fast forward to 2026, after years of campaigning, fundraising, and advocacy, brother Sweeney’s dream of building an all-inclusive playground at Boardman Township Park has moved one step closer to becoming reality, thanks to the overwhelming generosity of the community and the continued efforts of the Rowan Sweeney Memorial Foundation.

Earlier this month, the foundation presented a $145,000 donation to Boardman Township Park, marking one of the largest contributions toward the project. The future playground, to be known as Rowan’s Memorial Playground, will honor the memory of Rowan Sweeney.

More than just a playground, the project is envisioned as a welcoming space where children of all ages and abilities can play together without barriers. Park officials described it as a place designed to bring families together while ensuring every child has the opportunity to experience the joy of play, exploration, and inclusion.

The Rowan Sweeney Memorial Foundation, established by brother Sweeney, has led the fundraising campaign with a mission of making the community and the world a better place in Rowan’s name. Through community events, donations, and the support of countless individuals and organizations, the foundation has inspired an outpouring of goodwill that continues to drive the project forward.

Additional momentum came late last year when the project received a $54,319 NatureWorks grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, further strengthening efforts to make the inclusive playground a reality.

While the recent donation marks a significant milestone, fundraising is ongoing. The Rowan Sweeney Memorial Foundation continues to accept donations as the community works together to create a lasting tribute that will provide generations of children with a safe, accessible place to play, connect, and belong.
